WTC Final 2027 Race: Which Five Teams Can Still Qualify?

The race for the WTC Final 2027 is beginning to take shape, but the two places at The Oval are far from settled. Australia and defending champions South Africa currently occupy the leading positions, while New Zealand, Bangladesh and India remain realistic challengers.

The standings alone do not tell the full story. Each team has played a different number of matches, and their remaining schedules vary greatly in difficulty. Australia still have tours of South Africa and India ahead, New Zealand must play four Tests in Australia, while India have almost no room left for another poor result.

With the final scheduled at The Oval from June 9 to 13, 2027, here is how the five-team qualification race currently stands.

Current WTC 2025–27 Standings

Teams are ranked by the percentage of available points they have earned, commonly known as PCT. A Test victory is worth 12 points, a draw earns four and a tie gives both teams six. Points may also be deducted for slow over rates.

PositionTeamPointsPCTTests Remaining
1Australia9680.00%12
2South Africa3675.00%10
3New Zealand5272.22%10
4Bangladesh4055.56%6
5India6851.52%7

Australia, South Africa and New Zealand have created an early gap, but their percentages could change quickly once they begin playing more matches. Bangladesh and India are further behind, although both still have enough points available to challenge for the top two.

A finishing percentage in the mid-60s may be enough to reach the final. However, there is no fixed qualification mark because the final positions will also depend on how the competing teams perform against one another.

Australia Lead the Table but Face a Difficult Finish

Australia sit first with a PCT of 80 after collecting 96 points from their opening ten Tests. That gives Pat Cummins’ side a strong position, but their remaining schedule is far from comfortable.

Australia’s remaining series

  • Three Tests against South Africa away
  • Four Tests against New Zealand at home
  • Five Tests against India away

Australia need approximately six wins and a draw from these 12 matches to remain above 65%. That may sound achievable, but eight of their remaining Tests will be played in South Africa and India.

The three-match series against South Africa is particularly important because it is a direct meeting between the top two teams. Every Australian victory would strengthen their position while also preventing the defending champions from collecting points.

The final five Tests in India present another major challenge. Australia have won only two of their previous 18 Tests in India, so they will want to secure most of the points they need before that tour begins.

Australia remain favourites to qualify, but their current 80% figure should not be treated as secure.

South Africa Have Their Fate in Their Own Hands

South Africa have played only four Tests, fewer than any other team in the competition. Three victories have taken them to a PCT of 75, placing the defending champions second.

South Africa’s remaining series

  • Three Tests against Australia at home
  • Two Tests against Bangladesh at home
  • Three Tests against England at home
  • Two Tests against Sri Lanka away

The schedule gives South Africa a clear advantage: their next eight Tests will be played at home. Strong results against Australia, Bangladesh and England could allow them to establish a top-two position before travelling to Sri Lanka.

Winning six of their final ten Tests, with at least one additional draw, would keep their percentage around the level usually associated with qualification.

However, South Africa’s limited number of completed matches means their percentage is still sensitive. A home series defeat against Australia would not eliminate them, but it would make the later matches against Bangladesh and England much more important.

The Proteas therefore have an excellent opportunity, but much will depend on how they begin this demanding home run.

New Zealand Could Disrupt the Expected Final

New Zealand are third with 52 points and a PCT of 72.22. Series victories over West Indies and England have placed the inaugural WTC champions close behind the top two.

Their position looks promising, but they arguably face the most difficult block of matches among the leading teams.

New Zealand’s remaining series

  • Two Tests against India at home
  • Four Tests against Australia away
  • Two Tests against Sri Lanka at home
  • Two Tests against Pakistan away

New Zealand would finish just below 65% if they won six of their remaining ten Tests and lost the other four. Adding a draw would move them above that mark.

Their two home Tests against India could shape the prospects of both teams. A 2–0 victory would move New Zealand closer to the final while leaving India with an extremely difficult qualification task.

The four-Test tour of Australia is the larger obstacle. New Zealand have not beaten Australia in a Test since 2011, and losing heavily in that series could remove the advantage they have built.

Home conditions and a strong pace attack make New Zealand serious contenders, but their qualification chances may ultimately depend on whether they can improve their record against Australia.

Bangladesh Are No Longer Outside the Race

Bangladesh have emerged as one of the most interesting teams in the WTC Final 2027 qualification race. Three consecutive victories, including a historic Test win in Australia, have lifted them to fourth with a PCT of 55.56.

Bangladesh’s remaining series

  • Two Tests against West Indies at home
  • Two Tests against South Africa away
  • Two Tests against England at home

Bangladesh have been unbeaten at home during this WTC cycle. Sweeping West Indies would move their PCT back above 65%, but maintaining that position will be much harder.

To finish comfortably above the mid-60s, Bangladesh would need five victories from their final six Tests. Four wins and one draw would leave them just below 64%, which could keep them in contention but would require favourable results elsewhere.

The away series against South Africa is the biggest concern. Bangladesh could lose valuable points while simultaneously strengthening one of their direct competitors.

Their path is difficult, but no longer unrealistic. If Bangladesh continue winning at home and take something from South Africa, they could remain in the race until the final weeks of the league stage.

India Need a Near-Perfect Finish

India are fifth with 68 points and a PCT of 51.52. The draw against Sri Lanka in Colombo was particularly costly because a victory would have earned eight more points and moved India above Bangladesh.

Shubman Gill’s team now have seven Tests remaining.

India’s remaining series

  • Two Tests against New Zealand away
  • Five Tests against Australia at home

India need at least five wins and one draw to finish above 60%. Six victories would take them to approximately 64.81%, while winning all seven would produce a final PCT of 70.37%.

India’s results in the remaining seven TestsFinal PCTLikely position
Seven wins70.37%Strong qualification chance
Six wins and one draw66.67%Strong position
Six wins and one loss64.81%Competitive but not guaranteed
Five wins and two draws62.96%Dependent on other results
Fewer than five winsBelow 60%Qualification becomes unlikely

The encouraging part for India is that all seven matches are against teams currently above them. Beating New Zealand and Australia would allow India to gain points while directly reducing the totals of two major rivals.

The problem is that India have little room for another defeat or weather-affected draw. The two Tests in New Zealand may decide whether the five-match home series against Australia remains a qualification contest or becomes an attempt to finish the cycle positively.

A more detailed calculation of India’s remaining path is available in our breakdown of whether India can reach the WTC Final 2027.

Which Series Will Have the Biggest Impact?

Several remaining series involve two teams currently in the top-five race. These direct meetings will have a much greater effect than their position on the schedule might suggest.

SeriesWhy it matters
South Africa vs AustraliaDirect contest between the current top two
New Zealand vs IndiaIndia cannot afford a series defeat, while New Zealand can strengthen their position
Australia vs New ZealandFour Tests with a large number of points available
South Africa vs BangladeshBangladesh need away points against a direct rival
India vs AustraliaFinal five-Test series for both teams in the cycle

South Africa versus Australia could change the top of the table immediately. New Zealand versus India may determine whether India remain in the race, while the four Tests between Australia and New Zealand could produce the biggest single movement in PCT.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy may then become the final major qualification battle. If India and Australia both arrive needing points, every Test could affect not only their own position but also the chances of South Africa and New Zealand.

Is an Australia vs South Africa Final Already Likely?

Australia and South Africa are currently best placed, but an all-repeat final is not guaranteed. Both teams have difficult matches remaining, including a three-Test series against each other.

New Zealand appear to be the strongest challengers because they already have a PCT above 70. Their challenge is maintaining it through tours of Australia and Pakistan.

Bangladesh have fewer matches left and therefore less room to recover from a defeat. India have more points available but probably need at least six victories to qualify without depending heavily on other teams.

The WTC format makes the contest difficult to predict. A single draw can be costly, while an over-rate penalty can matter when teams finish close together. The leading sides must therefore continue chasing victories rather than protecting their current percentages.

The Race Is Still Open

Australia and South Africa control the strongest positions, but neither team has secured a place at The Oval. New Zealand are close enough to overtake either leader, while Bangladesh and India still have opportunities to change the expected final.

The next series between South Africa and Australia will begin reshaping the table. After that, New Zealand’s matches against India and Australia could determine whether the race remains open.

For India, the situation is simpler but more demanding: winning five Tests may keep the door open, while six or seven victories would give Gill’s team a far more realistic chance. Follow vijaybsport for further updates as every result changes the road to the WTC Final 2027.
